Athletes running a 400 meter race or a cyclist in a race always have resistance when they encounter air as they try to push forward. This resistance if reduced can cause immense benefits to the athletes as he can run faster than his opponent. Another arena where advanced materials have been used is swimming whereby resistance by water once you try to swim faster is a main cause for the swimmer to lose speed.
Significant amount of research has taken place in the sports fraternity in lowering down these resistances via advanced clothing material. Aerodynamic shapes of the helmets as well as aerodynamic shapes of seats have been used to reduce resistance while cycling.

Swimming body suits have undergone significant changes since swimming was introduced as a competitive sport. There are companies who only manufacture advanced clothing for swimmers and there single most aim is to produce such clothing which when worn by the swimmer will ease his cut through the water.

Athletes of late have begun using the compression stocking in a big way as a way to improve the return of blood to the heart as well as they claim that the pressurized compression stocks help in controlling the excessive swaying muscles while running. Now does that improve the running ability of the athletes is a question that still remains to be answered. But you knew how any new idea that people can try to get ahead of their competitors becomes the de factor standard.

In the case of cycling initially people used to wear normal plastic or metallic helmets but nowadays these helmets are made up of composite materials. These composite materials are so light and also the shape of so very aerodynamic such that the air resistance is reduced considerably. In fact the material used for making cycles for top line cyclists is also very specialized so that the cycle is light and encounters less resistance.

That said some of these uses like the compression socks have been used by the doctors now for long time for curing the varicose veins and preventing the deep vein thrombosis from occurring. That suggests that advancement in the sports arena have helped the average common man in a few quests as well as vice versa with a few things that the medical world uses have been used by athletes to achieve superior performances.

When traveling, consider sigvaris socks, juzo hosiery, graduated compression hosiery, compression stockings edema, or anti embolism socks.

People who travel long distances by air should know something called as the economy travel syndrome. This syndrome is in fact named for an actual issue whereby the blood starts to get accumulated in the lower level of the legs because of the lack of movement.

The root cause of the issue while travelling long distances by air solely in the economy class is because of the fact that in the economy seating you will usually never get enough room to move your legs.

Now in other classes namely the business class and the first class the seats are such that the passenger can move easily and also can stand easily and move around.

In a normal person and in normal position the legs veins exert extra pressure and pump back the blood to the heart but while seating for long hours the legs do not get that extra pressure to send the blood back to the heart. This accumulation of blood can be dangerous and is known as deep vein thrombosis. Though this is not fatal but in some cases it can turn fatal because of the pre existing medical conditions. In fact the name of the syndrome the economy class syndrome was given by a person whose mother died because of this reason even though she was in good health and not very aged.

Various people have various strategies to deal with these kinds of situations. Lot of people suggests that you should at least get up every one hours and walk for a few minutes in the airplane. That is easier said than done because of the reason that the plan is usually so cramped and also if you have seat which away from the aisle then it can cause disturbance and annoyance to other passengers.

There is one way whereby you can actually get the blood to not accumulate and that is wearing the compression socks. These compression socks come in varying pressures. They apply pressure at the ankles and then apply gradually less pressure as you go up the leg. That extra pressure helps send the blood up to the heart for increased circulation. Good ways to at least have some form of safety from blood accumulation.

So if you are a person who travels long distances regularly then make sure that you have compression socks with you and also make sure to get up every hour or so of the flight and take a walk down the aisle.

Treating Varicose Veins With Compression Socks
By Garrett Lynn

If you suffer from varicose veins of any measure, there are
ways to approach your situation to help improve your symptoms
and allow the blood to move more efficiently. The first attempt
to treat varicose veins is the use of compression stockings,
better known as compression socks or hoses. They have been
proven to effectively help treat varicose veins and allow your
legs to feel normal.

Compression socks can alleviate your legs from collecting blood
clots from long plane or car rides. Although they will not
completely eliminate varicose veins, stockings will take care of
certain symptoms normally caused by veins, such as swelling,
heaviness and aching. The socks are a cheap and simple way to
treat varicose veins, ranging from $50-$125. They apply pressure
around the ankle and go up the leg, allowing the blood to go
back up the leg and towards the heart. They come in different
shapes and have various strengths, all of which should be
discusses with your physician before buying. It is more
effective to obtain a prescription from your physician instead
of buying hoses over the counter, as the compression is much
stronger.

Compression socks should be strong, but not too tight. They
come in a variety of strengths, styles and colors. You should be
able to find a style and brand that you are comfortable wearing
all day long. At times you will pay more just for the brand
name, and not the effectiveness of the sock. There are brands
that are not the most expensive, but proven to be very effective
for the purpose you are looking for. Make sure you are able to
put on the socks comfortably with ease.

There are no known complications with wearing compression
stockings; however there will be a sustainable amount of time
before completely adjusting. You might complain of warm legs if
wearing the socks in hot weather all day long. If you have an
increased risk of forming blood clots in the leg, you should
wear the stockings all day, removing them at night. For those
with varicose veins and venous ulcers, they should be worn for
years. Patients should elevate their legs at night when they are
not wearing the stockings.

Some practice is required to wear compression socks. You should
put them on first thing in the morning after getting out of bed.
You might have to apply a small amount of silicone lotion or
place a rubber glove on the toes to pass the stockings over
legs. There may be a great deal of pulling to get the stockings
past the ankle. Once you are used to wearing them, putting them
on will be easier as the days go on.

The socks will last around 6-12 months. It is best to hand-wash
the stockings in order to maintain the elasticity. Depending on
the brand and price of the stocking that you purchase, the
longevity may be longer or shorter.

If you feel you need immediate care for your veins, no matter
the severity, see a physician today to see which compression
socks are right for you. A stronger compression might be
necessary, which means seeking a prescription given by your
local physician.

Compression Hose Keep Your Legs Feeling Healthy and Energetic All Day

By Jack Lombardi

What is a compression hose and how does it work? The heart in the body forces blood away from the heart pump into the arteries and veins. Arteries carry the blood away from the heart while the veins return the blood to the heart. The veins has valves that open to allow blood to flow back to the heart and close to prevent blood flowing backward. When the valves are overworked and not closing normally, the circulation problems begin. The compression hose works like an external pump to assist the valves by closing it normally.

Did you think that compression hose or compression hosiery is not for you? It is and compression hose is available for men and women in a large variety, styles and colors. Our compression hose is different than other leading brand of compression hosiery. Compression pantyhose and compression hose are for everyone! Lighter graduated compressions hose will keep your legs feeling healthy and energetic all day by stimulating blood circulation. Medium to strong compression hose are for the prevention and therapy of varicose veins, venous diseases and cellulite.

Graduated compression support hose and compression hosiery are the medically-accepted way to relieve minor or more serious leg pain related to swelling, venous insufficiency, deep vein thrombosis, varicose veins or other conditions.

Compression support hosiery works in a way that causes external compression to apply controlled pressure to the skin. This then supports the superficial venous system, helping to reduce the increased hydrostatic pressure and redress the balance between the deep and superficial veins. This helps in reducing edema and aiding venous return.

Economy Class Syndrome can be avoided if the guidelines are followed by visiting airhealth.org and americanheart.org. It can be in any form of traveling by plan, train or automobile. If the trip lasted more than several hours, there is a risk of swollen and achy legs problem that can become more and more serious with each passing minute. Wearing our graduated compression Relax Unisex and Miss Relax Knee High Travel Socks during air travel reduce the risk of blood clots and Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) on long flights. Doctors strongly recommended by taking simple and necessary precaution before traveling.

Compression therapy is used in the treatment of lymphedema and venous disorders. The type and extent of treatment depends on the severity of the problem and a doctor should always be consulted.

Medical grade graduated compression hosiery applies gradient compression on your legs, assisting the venous return of blood. Stronger compression is applied at the ankle and lessens up the leg. It assists the natural mechanical function of the leg muscles. The gradient compression support hose compresses dilated veins and helps blood return to the heart. Compression hose can be used as an alternative to compression bandaging for the treatment of active ulcers. It is also very useful for preventing ulcer recurrences. Compression hosiery is classified according to the pressure level applied at the ankle. Compression hosiery is made from a number of different fibers including nylon, cotton yarn and elastane. Off-the-shelf compression hose include circular knit stockings and flat-bed knit stockings. Flat-bed knit stockings are more flexible than circular knit stockings, making them easier to get on and off. Net stockings and one-way stretch stockings are available as made-to-measure items.

Studies on compression support hosiery show that following removal of the stocking there is little evidence of reversal of the underlying disease process such as improvement in calf muscle function or restoration of the valves. Hence, patients need to be made aware that graduated compression pantyhose hosiery, in conjunction with exercise, diet, limb elevation and skin care, is part of the long-term management plan of venous insufficiency and leg ulceration.

Compression Stockings do not have to look like the old medical Compressions you are used to seeing. Both the Ultrasheer and Opaque womens medical stockings come in a wide variety of compression levels, colors, and sizes to complement any occasion.

Compression stockings may be purchased without a prescription or an order from a doctor, although for sever cases of varicose veins it is recommended that you see your doctor regarding the correct compression level for you. While compression stockings are more expensive than regular stockings due to the inbuilt compression, you can find them online at discount prices allowing you to narrow the price gap.

Practically everyone can benefit from wearing compression stockings regularly and promote excellent leg health. Compression stockings can really help ease the discomfort of thrombophlebitis. In this condition, the leg veins closest to the skins surface (superficial veins) or those deeper become inflamed by a blood clot.

Compressions are also very good for pregnant women, The venous system is subject to twice the normal strain during pregnancy. The veins have to transport an increased volume of blood and the higher concentration of progestterone has a negative effect on them.

Compression stockings are more than medical aids, however; they are also cosmetic aids. Many women feel ashamed of blemishes such as varicose veins or venous ulcers. Compression stockings are made of strong elastic material and fit tightly at the feet and gradually become less tight at the knee/thigh. The pressure in the stockings is graded and this allows for the stockings to constantly squeeze the leg muscles. Compression stockings are available in various sizes and pressures and it is very important that they fit you properly. They are made to fit your calf diameter, not foot size.

Compression stockings can be helpful in many cases of DVT. However, they may be difficult to put on for older people, people who are obese, or people who have certain disabilities. Stocking aid dorkings are a valuable assistance for putting stockings on, ensuring that you gain the associated health benefits of wearing them.

5 Tips to Avoid Swollen Feet on an Airplane

By Deborah Woodward

It is fairly common to have your feet and ankles swell during long airline flights. It’s an uncomfortable and sometimes painful side effect of sitting for long periods in a cramped airplane seat. The swelling or edema is caused mainly because of inactivity. When a person walks, the contraction of the muscles in the legs compresses the veins and helps in counteracting gravity in order to move blood back to the heart. Also the way your legs and feet are positioned when seated increases the pressure in your veins and contributes to fluids moving from the blood into the surrounding tissues of the legs and feet.

In addition to swelling, sitting motionless for long periods of time increases your risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT. DVT is a serious and often fatal condition where a blood clot forms in a vein deep within the muscles, usually in the calf or thigh. The following tips will help keep your feet and ankles from swelling and will have you comfortably slipping those shoes back on at the end of your flight!

1. Get up and move around – For every hour of your flight you should try to get up and move around for 3 to 4 minutes before sitting back down.

2. Get blood circulating by doing exercises while in your seat – If you’re not able to get up and out of your seat every hour, there are simple exercises you can do to get the blood circulating in your lower extremities. Pointing and flexing your feet as well as rotating your ankles in circles are a good start. Check the back of your in-flight magazine. The airlines usually dedicate at least a page or two to exercises you can do while sitting in your seat.

3. Stay Hydrated- Dehydration causes blood vessels to narrow and blood to thicken. Drink plenty of fluids and avoid alcoholic or caffeinated beverages as they contribute to dehydration.

4. Avoid regular socks – Regular socks that have a constricting elastic band around the calf or ankle will not only become uncomfortable after a while, but will decrease circulation to and thereby increase the swelling.

5. Wear compression socks – Graduated compression socks are special stockings that help promote circulation in your legs. The stockings apply a certain amount of pressure near your ankle and then apply gradually less and less pressure as they move up the leg. The graduated pressure helps push the blood back up the leg and therefore prevents swelling. These aren’t your grandma’s support stockings. They come in many styles, colors, function (such as athletic) and pressure. Finally, if your feet DO swell, soak them in a tub of Epsom salts. Remember that swelling is caused by too much fluid being retained in the body. When you soak your feet in the Epsom salts, the salt draws water out of the body and is a natural way to reduce swelling.

Compression Stockings Can Prevent Post Thrombotic Syndrome

By Jeffrey Ware The use of compression stockings by patients after treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) has been found to prevent post thrombotic syndrome (PTS)? Recent studies published in medical journals and professional web sites such as the "Annals of Internal Medicine", "American Family physician", "American College of Physicians, and the "American College of Phlebology" have shown that compression stockings prevent post thrombotic syndrome in 50% of patients. Post thrombotic syndrome is a long term complication of DVT that is experienced by 1 out of 3 patients.

The symptoms include pain, swelling, cramping, numbness, tingling, and itching of the affected leg. The skin on the lower part of the leg may harden and darken. PTS symptoms may last for years. PTS may affect 50% of patients with DVT after 2 years. The American College of Clinical Pharmacy recommends the use of compression stockings after the onset of a DVT. They recommend that patients wear the these for two years after initial onset of DVT.

Below knee stockings with a compression level of 30-40 mmHg should be routinely prescribed to all patients in this group. With more patients with DVT is being treated on an outpatient basis by emergency department physicians, it is imperative that patients are prescribed knee high compression stockings upon discharge. Compression stockings are not contraindicated in combination of anticoagulant medication.

The positive clinical outcomes of wearing stockings are dependent on patient compliance. This is true for all medical indications of stocking use. A recent study on patient compliance by C.L. Morgan, et al concluded that patients with detailed instructions and education about compression therapy become more compliant with the prescribed treatment. It is important for the prescribing physician to educate the patient on where to find this detailed information or present it them personally. Medical stockings are widely available today.

They come in many colors and styles for everyday use. One of the best places to buy compression stockings is from the premium online retailers. There you can find a variety of styles of colors of stockings at a reduced price. Shipping is fast and affordable and the prices are usually less than the pharmacies or health care stores. Patients may also find useful information about compression stocking information such as how to measure their leg for stocking size, how to don stockings, how to care for stockings, and much more.

The use of compression stockings by patients after treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) has been found to prevent post thrombotic syndrome (PTS)? Recent studies published in medical journals show this.

Compression Stockings and Post Thrombotic Syndrome

Post thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a burdensome and costly complication of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) that develops in 20-40% of patients within 1-2 years after symptomatic DVT.

Facts About Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

In addition, nearly one-third of people who have a DVT will have long-term complications (post-thrombotic syndrome), such as swelling, pain, discoloration, and scaling.
